Since he published his two books of literary criticism, Bias: Offensively Chinese / Australian (Otherland Publishing, 2007, a limited edition of 200 copies, out of print now) and Beyond the Yellow Pale: Essays and Criticism (Otherland Publishing 2010, a limited edition of 100 copies, three copies left), Ouyang Yu has now brought out his third book of criticism, Memories and Voices: A Book of Criticism (Otherland Publishing, 2024), in two editions, a paperback and a limited edition of 100 copies.

This book focuses on a range of issues that deeply concern the writer as a translator, self-translator, critic and self-critic as well as a poet, as shown by some of the titles, ‘Interview with Ouyang by Yu, in the Form of a Non-essay’, ‘Mo Yan, My China, Self-colonisation and Hallucination’ and ‘Self-translation and Bilingual Writing as a Transnational Writer in the Age of Machine Translation’, spread under five section headings, ‘Interviews and Self-interviews’, ‘On China and Migration’, ‘On Poetry and Creative Mistakes’, ‘On Translation and Self-translation’, and ‘On Literary Criticism, Self-criticism, Genre-crossing and Bilingual Writing’.

The book is 82,797 words and 349 pages.
